Bishan is a busy town in Singapore. It is located right in the middle of Singapore. Many people call Bishan their home. Houses here can be quite expensive. This is because Bishan is very close to the city center.
What's in a Name?
The name Bishan comes from a Cantonese cemetery. This cemetery was called Peck San Theng. It means "pavilions on the hill." The cemetery was built in 1870. Later, the government developed this area. Now, many people live in Bishan.
Getting Around Bishan
Bishan is easy to reach. It is next to the Central Expressway (CTE). This road connects Bishan to other parts of Singapore. Bishan also has its own MRT station. It is called Bishan station. There is also a bus interchange. Here, people can catch many different buses.
Schools and Learning
Bishan has many schools for students. There are 4 primary schools. You can also find 7 secondary schools. One famous school is Raffles Institution. It is a well-known secondary school and junior college.
Bishan is also home to the Ministry of Education Language Centre (MOELC). Students from all over Singapore come here. They learn languages like French, German, and Japanese. They can also learn Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia.
Shopping Fun
Bishan has three places where you can shop.
- Junction 8 is a large shopping mall. It is in the heart of Bishan. You can find it near the MRT station and bus interchange.
- Bishan North Shopping Mall is an outdoor area. It has shops that sell fruits and vegetables. It is not a typical big shopping center.
- Thomson Plaza is another shopping mall. It is located on Upper Thomson Road.
