Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn (1876-1948) was a very important religious leader in Vietnam during the early 1900s. He was the first Vietnamese Bishop of the Bui Chu Diocese and the second Vietnamese Bishop in the Vietnamese Catholic Church. He also worked as a teacher and helped people learn about culture. Bishop Hồ Ngọc Cẩn started a group of religious sisters called the Congregation of The Daughters of Our Lady of The Holy Rosary in Vietnam.

His Early Life

Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was born as Hồ Ngọc Ca on December 3, 1876. His birthplace was Ba Châu Community, in Thua Thien-Huế Province. His parents were Joseph Hồ Ngọc Tri and Anna Nguyễn Thị Đào.

In 1886, when Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was 10 years old, his father passed away. His mother then moved with him and his younger brother to her hometown. They went to live in Trường An Village.

Becoming a Priest

In 1888, Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was adopted by a priest named Franics Trương Văn Thường. He tried to join the An Ninh Minor Seminary but did not pass the first exam.

By 1889, Hồ Ngọc Cẩn passed his exam and entered the An Ninh Minor Seminary. This school was in Cửa Tùng Town, Quảng Trị Province. After two years, another priest, Eugène Marie Joseph Allys, adopted him. Hồ Ngọc Cẩn studied at the Minor Seminary for seven years.

On May 5, 1896, he moved to the Major Seminary of Phú Xuân. He studied there for four years.

On December 22, 1900, Hồ Ngọc Cẩn became a Sub-Deacon. At this time, he changed his birth name from Hồ Ngọc Ca to Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn. On February 2, 1902, he was given the position of Deacon.

His Time as a Priest

On February 20, 1902, Hồ Ngọc Cẩn became a priest at 26 years old. In February 1903, Father Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was appointed as a deputy priest. He worked at Kẻ Văn Parish in Quảng Trị Province.

At Kẻ Văn, Father Hồ Ngọc Cẩn started classes for children and adults. These classes taught people how to read and write. They also studied the Bible. From 1907 to 1910, he was the main priest of the Kẻ Hạc Parish in Quảng Bình Province.

On September 17, 1910, Father Hồ Ngọc Cẩn became a professor. He taught at the An Ninh Sub Seminary in Quảng Trị Province. He taught many subjects, including Latin, French, Math, and Vietnamese.

In 1923, Father Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was appointed as the main priest of the Trường An Community. By 1924, he became the director of the seminary in Trường An. He was the first Vietnamese professor to teach at a Catholic Seminary.

Becoming a Bishop

On May 19, 1935, Father Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was chosen by the Holy See to be the Deputy Bishop of the Bui Chu Diocese. He was the first Vietnamese Bishop to be ordained in Vietnam.

On June 29, 1935, Father Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn became a Bishop. This special ceremony happened at Phủ Cam Main Cathedral. His Bishop's symbol had a motto: “In Omni Patientia et Doctrina.” This means “In everything Patience and Teaching.” He was the second Vietnamese priest to become a Bishop, after Bishop Jean-Baptiste Nguyễn Bá Tòng.

After one year as Deputy Bishop, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn took over from Bishop Pedro Munagorri Trung. He became the main Bishop of Bui Chu.

End of His Life

On November 27, 1948, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn passed away. He was 72 years old and died from problems with asthma. He passed away at the Bui Chu Bishop’s House. Three days later, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was buried in the Bui Chu Cathedral.

Cultural Contributions

Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn opened the Sacred Heart Hospital in Bui Chu in 1945. He asked the Sisters of St. Paul to manage the hospital. He also helped orphanages and a special fund to rescue people. These people were victims of a terrible famine in Bui Chu in 1945. He was also asked to be a top advisor by the government of President Ho Chi Minh in 1945.

Educational Contributions

Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn started four primary schools in Bui Chu. He also set up a primary school in Saigon.

He built four more primary schools in Huế. He asked the monks of the Order of the Sacred Heart to run these schools. He also started a printing house called "Trường An." This place printed books and documents. These books taught about the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Huế.

Besides being a teacher, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn was also a writer and a journalist.

Religious Contributions

In 1923, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn oversaw the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Huế. After one year, he became the first leader of this religious group.

The Bui Chu Diocese used to have a Major Seminary. But after 1931, students went to a different seminary in Nam Dinh. Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn reopened the Quan Phuong Seminary in 1940.

On September 8, 1946, Bishop Dominic Mary Hồ Ngọc Cẩn officially announced a new religious group. It was called the Congregation of The Daughters of Our Lady of The Holy Rosary. Their Vietnamese name is Hội Dòng Chị Em Con Đức Mẹ Mân Côi Bui Chu, Việt Nam. The symbol for this group is FMSR, which comes from French. Since then, this group has continued to grow and help many people.
