The Bittenbender Covered Bridge was a special wooden bridge in Huntington Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It was a type of covered bridge, which means it had a roof and walls. These coverings helped protect the wooden parts of the bridge from weather damage.
This bridge was quite long, measuring about 68.6 feet (20.9 meters). It was built in 1888 using a strong design called a Queenpost Truss. This design uses triangular shapes to make the bridge very stable. The bridge also had rough wooden planks on its sides.
The Bittenbender Covered Bridge
The Bittenbender Covered Bridge crossed over Huntington Creek. For many years, it was an important way for people to get across the water. It was also very special because it was the very last covered bridge left in all of Luzerne County.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its age and unique design, the Bittenbender Covered Bridge was recognized as a historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This list includes buildings, structures, and places that are important to the history of the United States. Being on this list helps protect and preserve these special places.
The Bridge's End
Sadly, the Bittenbender Covered Bridge is no longer standing. On June 28, 2006, a big flood hit the area. The powerful floodwaters destroyed the historic bridge. It was a sad day for many who remembered the old wooden structure.
