Bivalve is a small, quiet community located in Marin County, California. It's a place that doesn't have its own official town government, which is why it's called an unincorporated community. This unique spot got its name because of its history with oysters!

Discovering Bivalve

Bivalve is found about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) northwest of a town called Point Reyes Station. It sits at an elevation of 43 feet (13 meters) above sea level. A railway line, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, passes through this area.

How Bivalve Got Its Name

The name "Bivalve" might sound a bit unusual, but it tells a cool story about the area's past. In 1907, a company called the Pacific Oyster Company started a huge oyster farm here. They set up about 450 acres (182 hectares) of oyster beds.

Oysters are a type of bivalve mollusk, which means they have two shells that are hinged together. Because of these many oyster beds, the place became known as Bivalve! It's a fun example of how a place's name can come directly from what was important there.
