The Bizzaria of Florence is a very unusual citrus plant. It's special because it can grow two different kinds of fruit on the same plant: a citron and a sour orange. Sometimes, it even grows fruit that looks like a mix of both!

This strange plant is a type of "graft chimera." This means it's made from two different plants that have been joined together. The Bizzaria is probably the very first graft chimera ever created by people.

On one part of the plant, you might see branches with leaves and fruit that look exactly like a regular Florentine citron. On another part, you'll find branches with leaves and fruit that are clearly from a sour orange. And then, some parts of the plant show a mix of features from both!

The Bizzaria plant has a few different spellings for its name, like Bizaria, Bizzarria, Bizarria, and even Bizarre.

How the Bizzaria Was Found

The Bizzaria was first discovered in 1640. It was found by a person named Pietro Nati. He found it at a large country house called Torre degli Agli. This house belonged to a very rich banking family called the Panciatichi family.

For a long time, people thought the Bizzaria plant had disappeared forever. But then, in the 1970s, it was found again! Paolo Galleotti rediscovered it. He was the head gardener at the Villa di Castello and the Boboli Gardens in Florence.
