About Bjorg Lambrecht
Bjorg Lambrecht grew up in a Belgian town called Knesselare. This town is located between the cities of Bruges and Ghent. His parents were Kurt and Anje Lambrecht, and he had a sister named Britt.
Bjorg's Cycling Journey
Bjorg started showing his cycling skills early on.
Junior and Under-23 Success
In 2015, Bjorg became the Belgian national junior champion. This meant he was the best young cyclist in Belgium for his age group. He beat Glen Van Nuffelen and Stijn Goolaerts in that race.
The next year, in 2016, Bjorg surprised many by winning the first part of the Ronde de l'Isard race. During the final stage, he was accidentally sent the wrong way by race officials. But the judges realized the mistake, and Bjorg still won the race. He was the third Belgian cyclist to win this event. A few weeks later, he also won a stage at the Grand Prix Priessnitz spa race. This stage had a tough uphill finish on cobblestones.
In early 2017, Bjorg won the Liège–Bastogne–Liège U23 race. He won by sprinting ahead of three other riders at the end. Later that year, he continued to achieve great results. He finished second in the Ronde de l'Isard and the Tour de l'Avenir. He also won a stage and the overall title at the Grand Prix Priessnitz spa.
Becoming a Professional Cyclist
In 2018, Bjorg Lambrecht became a professional cyclist with the Lotto–Soudal team. His biggest achievement as a professional came in 2019. He finished fourth in the tough Flèche Wallonne race. In April of that same year, he signed a new contract to stay with his team for two more years.
A Sad Day: Bjorg's Passing
On August 5, 2019, Bjorg Lambrecht was racing in stage three of the 2019 Tour de Pologne. During the race, he had a crash. No other riders seemed to be involved in the accident. He was quickly taken to a hospital in Rybnik, Poland, but sadly, he passed away during surgery.
Out of respect for Bjorg, the next stage of the race was changed. Riders rode together slowly to honor his memory. Bjorg's team, Lotto-Soudal, led the group of cyclists for the first part of the race. When they reached the spot where Bjorg had crashed, everyone stopped for a moment of silence.
On August 7, 2019, the team doctor explained that Bjorg's death was caused by a severe injury to his liver. This led to internal bleeding and a heart attack.
Bjorg's funeral was held on August 13, 2019, in his hometown of Knesselare. Many people attended, including his teammates, who helped carry his coffin. Moments of silence were also held at other cycling events to remember Bjorg. This included the 2019 European Road Championships and the 2019 Vuelta a España. The Vuelta a España was a big race that Bjorg was supposed to compete in.
