The black-backed bush tanager (Urothraupis stolzmanni) is a special type of bird. It is also sometimes called the black-backed bush-finch. This bird belongs to the Thraupidae family, which includes many types of tanagers.
This bird is unique because it is the only species in its group, called the genus Urothraupis. You can find the black-backed bush tanager living in the countries of Colombia and Ecuador. Its natural habitat is in wet, tropical montane forests, which are forests found on mountains.
Discovering This Bird
The black-backed bush tanager was officially described in 1885. Two scientists, Władysław Taczanowski and Hans von Berlepsch, gave it its scientific name. They studied birds collected by a Polish zoologist named Jan Sztolcman.
These birds were found on the eastern slopes of the Tungurahua Volcano in central Ecuador. This is how scientists learn about new species and give them their proper names.
What Does Its Name Mean?
The scientific name of this bird is Urothraupis stolzmanni. The first part, Urothraupis, is the name of its genus. This name comes from Ancient Greek words. Oura means "tail," and thraupis was a name for a small bird.
The second part of the name, stolzmanni, honors the person who collected the birds, Jan Sztolcman. Scientists often name new species after the people who discover or study them.
