Black James facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Black James (born before 1640, died around 1686), also known as Wullumahchein, was an important Nipmuc leader. He served as a constable and a spiritual guide for the Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck people. His community lived on the Chaubunagungamaug Reservation in what was then colonial Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Who Was Black James?

Black James was a respected figure among his people. He lived during a time when European settlers were expanding their presence in North America. He played a key role in his community, both in keeping order and in spiritual matters.

His Role as a Constable

After becoming a Christian, Black James was chosen by Daniel Gookin to be a constable. A constable was like a police officer or a local official. He helped keep peace and order in the "praying towns". These were special villages where Native Americans who had become Christians lived.

Black James and King Philip's War

In 1675, Black James signed an agreement. This agreement stated that he would not help King Philip, a Wampanoag leader. King Philip was preparing for a major conflict with the English settlers. This conflict became known as King Philip's War. Even though he signed the treaty, some records suggest Black James might have supported King Philip during the war. King Philip's War was a very difficult and important event in the history of colonial America.

Land and Legacy

After King Philip's War ended, Black James was involved in land agreements. He transferred different pieces of land to settlers in the Nipmuc territory. These lands included areas like Quantisset and Maanexit. These places are now in eastern Connecticut, close to Rhode Island.

His Final Years

Black James passed away around 1686. His last words were written down by Reverend Daniel Takawambait. This record was later shared with others. In 1686, a legal document was signed by his family, confirming his death. Interestingly, another Native American later used the name "Black James" until about 1708. This shows the lasting impact and respect associated with the name.
