Black Legend (Spain) facts for kids
The Black Legend (Spanish: Leyenda negra) is a term for propaganda that was spread to make people dislike the Spanish Empire, its people, and their culture. This propaganda was created by Spain's rivals in Europe. They wanted to make Spain look bad, reduce the importance of Spanish discoveries, and lessen Spain's power in the world.
This idea came from real events that happened during the Spanish colonization of the Americas. There were indeed acts of violence and cruelty during this time. However, the Black Legend often used very dramatic and exaggerated stories of these events. It also often ignored that other powerful countries at the time did similar things.
What is the White Legend?
The "White Legend" (Leyenda Blanca) is a term used to describe the opposite idea. It refers to a view of Spanish colonial practices that is too positive or perfect. Some people think this view developed because others tried too hard to correct the negative bias of the Black Legend. Others believe it grew on its own.
The "White Legend" or "Pink Legend" (Leyenda Rosa) can also refer to propaganda spread within Spain itself. This was done by Philip II of Spain and his family. This propaganda aimed to show that Spain was ruled by a wise and religious king. It also tried to control the anger and problems caused by his strong policies and wars, especially in the Netherlands.
