History of the Blackberry River Inn
The first parts of what we now call the Blackberry River Inn were built in 1763. Imagine how old that is!
Big Changes by a Famous Architect
In the 1920s, the mansion got a big makeover. An architect named Alfredo S.G. Taylor designed these changes. He was from New York City but spent his summers in Norfolk. Taylor designed many buildings in Norfolk. The changes he made to this house were some of his biggest projects. He changed it so much that it looked very different from its original design.
From Farm to Inn
A man named Seth H. Moseley owned the property for many years. He was born in 1881. He also owned a hotel in New York City. Until 1939, this property was a farm called Blackberry River Farm.
After Mr. Moseley passed away, Dorothea and James Schwarzhaupt bought the property. They had a great idea! They decided to turn the farm into an inn. That's how the Blackberry River Inn got its start.
The Inn After 1970
On July 19, 1971, the Schwarzhaupts sold the inn to a local company. This company made some modern updates to the property. They even added a swimming pool for guests to enjoy!
In 1984, the inn was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site. The property includes about 9 acres in Norfolk and 1 acre in North Canaan, Connecticut.
Today, the Blackberry River Inn is a bed and breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight and enjoy a delicious breakfast in the morning. It's a great way to experience a piece of history!
