The Blackburn War Memorial is a special monument. It is found in Corporation Park in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. This memorial was first built to remember the brave people who lost their lives in the First World War. Later, it was also made to honor those who died in the Second World War.

Remembering Heroes

This memorial helps us remember the soldiers and others from Blackburn. They gave their lives during two very big wars. It is a place where people can visit and think about their sacrifice.

A Special Sculpture

The most important part of the memorial is a bronze sculpture. It was created by a famous artist named Bertram Mackennal. This beautiful statue is known by two names: Mother England or Sacrifice. It shows a powerful image of a mother figure. She represents England, remembering her children who fought for their country.

How the Memorial Was Built

The idea for the memorial started a long time ago. The Blackburn War Memorial Committee approved the plans in October 1922. This committee helped decide how the memorial would look. They also planned a peaceful Garden of Remembrance around it.

The memorial was officially shown to the public on 2 August 1924. Many people gathered for this important event. It was a day to honor the heroes and their families.
