The Blanche River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. Its name, rivière Blanche, means "White River" in French. It's a branch, or tributary, of the Nicolet River. The Nicolet River then flows into the mighty St. Lawrence River. The Blanche River flows completely within the town of Chesterville. This area is part of the Arthabaska Regional County Municipality and the Centre-du-Québec region.

Where Does the Blanche River Flow?

The Blanche River starts in a hilly area. This spot is about 5.2 kilometers (3.2 miles) northeast of Chesterville village. It's also about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) southwest of the border of Sainte-Hélène-de-Chester.

The river flows for about 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles). Here's how it travels:

  • It goes southwest for 2.0 kilometers (1.2 miles). Along the way, it crosses Chemin du Rang Campagna and Chemin Craig Nord.
  • Then, it turns south for 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles). Here, it meets the Chûtes mortes stream.
  • It continues south for 0.8 kilometers (0.5 miles). It passes under the Rang Fréchette and Rang Saint-Philippe road bridges. It also meets the Hamel watercourse.
  • Finally, it flows southwest for 3.2 kilometers (2.0 miles). It crosses Route 161 before reaching its end.

The Blanche River joins the Nicolet River on its east bank. This meeting point is in a small area called "Domaine-de-la-Halte." It's about 4.0 kilometers (2.5 miles) southeast of the center of Chesterville. It's also 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) downstream from the border of Saint-Rémi-de-Tingwick.

What's in the Area Around the River?

Many other streams and rivers are close to the Blanche River. These are called "hydrographic slopes." They show how water flows in the region.

How Did the River Get Its Name?

The name "rivière Blanche" was officially recognized on September 5, 1985. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This group is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
