Wilbur Bass (born May 31, 1969), known as Blaq Poet, is an American rapper. He is from Queensbridge, New York City. He has been making hip hop music since 1987.
About Blaq Poet
Blaq Poet first became known in 1987. He was featured on a song called "Beat You Down." This song was part of a musical rivalry called the "Bridge Wars." It was a "diss song," which means it was written to show disagreement with another artist, KRS-One. At that time, Poet was about 17 years old.
In 1991, Blaq Poet teamed up with DJ Hot Day. They formed a duo called PHD. PHD stands for Poet & Hot Day. They released their first album, Without Warning, with Tuff City Records. After that, they released several 12-inch singles and an EP. An EP is a shorter music album. They continued making music until 1996. Then, they decided to go their separate ways. They couldn't find another record label to sign with.
Poet then joined a new group called Screwball. He worked with KL, Hostyle, and Solo. Together, they released two albums and a collection of their songs. After this, Poet started his solo career. His first solo album was called Rewind: Deja Screw. It came out in 2006. Famous producer DJ Premier helped make some of the music on this album.
In 2007, Blaq Poet appeared on a song called "Victory." This song was on the album Hip Hop Lives by KRS-One and Marley Marl. This collaboration showed that the "Bridge Wars" rivalry had ended.
Later, Poet signed with DJ Premier's record label, Year Round Records. He released his second album, Tha Blaqprint, in 2009. Most of the music for this album was produced by DJ Premier. Other artists like Lil' Fame and Noreaga also appeared on the album. Poet also worked with other artists from Year Round Records, like the NYGz and Nick Javas. For a remix of his song "Ain't Nuttin' Changed," Poet worked with West Coast rappers MC Eiht and Young Maylay.
On November 3, 2020, Blaq Poet released an album with Serious Truth. It was called "Cultural Revolution." This album was inspired by things happening in the world. It also aimed to bring hip hop music back to its original style and meaning. Cultural Revolution became very popular among dedicated hip hop fans and DJs. It gained over 120,000 views and listens across different music platforms. When the album came out, it was often played on radio stations. These included stations in the UK, Germany, Belgium, and the USA. It was even played on DJ Premier's radio show on Sirius XM.
