Wilbur Bass (born May 31, 1969), known as Blaq Poet, is an American rapper. He comes from Queensbridge, a neighborhood in New York City.

About Blaq Poet

Blaq Poet first shared his music in 1987. He was featured on a song called "Beat You Down." This song was part of a famous rap rivalry known as the Bridge Wars. At that time, Poet was about 17 years old.

Early Music Career

In 1991, Blaq Poet teamed up with DJ Hot Day. They formed a duo called PHD, which stood for Poet & Hot Day. Their first album, Without Warning, was released on Tuff City Records. After that, they released several singles and an EP. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs. They continued making music until 1996. They then went their separate ways because they couldn't find another record label.

After PHD, Poet joined forces with KL, Hostyle, and Solo. They created a new group called Screwball. This group released two albums and a collection of their songs. Later, Blaq Poet started his solo career. His first solo album, Rewind: Deja Screw, came out in 2006. Famous producer DJ Premier helped create some of the music on this album.

Ending the Bridge Wars

In 2007, Blaq Poet appeared on a song called "Victory." This song was on the album Hip Hop Lives by KRS-One and Marley Marl. This album was important because it showed that the Bridge Wars, a long-standing rap rivalry, had finally ended.

Working with DJ Premier

Blaq Poet later signed with DJ Premier's record label, Year Round Records. In 2009, he released his second album, Tha Blaqprint, through this label. Most of the songs on Tha Blaqprint were produced by DJ Premier. Other artists like Lil' Fame and Noreaga also appeared on the album. Poet's labelmates, the NYGz and Nick Javas, were also featured. For a remix of his song "Ain't Nuttin' Changed," Poet worked with West Coast rappers MC Eiht and Young Maylay.

Recent Projects

On November 3, 2020, Blaq Poet released an album with Serious Truth. It was called Cultural Revolution. This album was inspired by events happening at the time. It also aimed to bring hip hop music back to its original style and cultural meaning. Cultural Revolution became very popular among dedicated hip hop fans and DJs. It has been listened to and streamed over 120,000 times. When it was released, the album was often played on radio stations in the UK, Germany, Belgium, and the USA. It was also featured on DJ Premier's radio show on Sirius XM.
