The Story of Blendville
How Blendville Got Its Name
Blendville started out with a slightly different name: Blend City. It was founded in the 1870s, which was a long time ago! The name "Blend" came from something important happening nearby: "ore blending." This means that different types of ore (rocks containing valuable metals) were mixed together in this area. This was likely done to prepare them for processing, which was a big deal in mining towns like those around Joplin.
Early Days and Growth
For a while, Blendville had its own post office. It was called Blendsville and opened in 1890. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages, which was very important before emails and phones! However, it only stayed open for about ten years, closing in 1900.
Becoming Part of Joplin
In 1892, Blendville officially became part of Joplin, Missouri. When a smaller community is "annexed" to a larger city, it means the city expands its borders to include that community. This often happens as cities grow and need more space or want to include nearby areas. So, Blendville became one of the many neighborhoods that make up the city of Joplin.
