Blitum californicum (also known as Chenopodium californicum) is a type of flowering plant. People often call it California goosefoot. Sometimes it's also called "Indian lettuce," but this name can be confusing as it's used for other plants too.

This plant grows naturally in California and Baja California. You can find it in open areas up to about 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) high. It likes different kinds of places like grasslands, chaparral (a type of shrubland), deserts, and even mountain areas.

What it Looks Like

This plant is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years and does not have a woody stem. It grows many stems that can lie on the ground or stand upright. These stems can reach almost a meter (about 3 feet) tall.

The plant grows from a thick, fleshy root called a caudex. If it has many stems, it might form a clump or a mat on the ground. Its leaves grow on long stems called petioles. They are shaped like triangles or arrowheads and can be up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long. The edges of the leaves have deep, sharp teeth.

The plant's flowers grow in round clusters. These clusters are found along a flower spike. Each cluster is dense and has several rounded flowers. Each flower has flat parts that cover the fruit as it grows. The fruit is a reddish, small, dry fruit called a utricle. It forms a layer around the seed.

How People Used It

Long ago, Native Americans used California goosefoot for many things. They used it as a medicine to help with illnesses. They also used it to make soap.

The seeds of the plant were ground into flour. This flour could be used to make bread or other foods. The leaves and young shoots were also cooked and eaten as a vegetable. This shows how useful this plant was to the people living in these areas.
