Dudleya blochmaniae is a special kind of plant called a succulent plant. Succulents are plants that store water in their leaves, stems, or roots, which helps them live in dry places. You might know this plant by its common names: Blochman's liveforever or Blochman's dudleya.

Where Does It Live?
This plant is found only in certain areas, which means it is endemic to those places. It grows in habitats called coastal sage scrub, which are areas with low-growing shrubs near the ocean. You can find Dudleya blochmaniae along the coastlines of Southern California in the U.S. and northwestern Baja California in Mexico.
What Does It Look Like?
Dudleya blochmaniae grows in small groups of leaves that look like a rose, called rosettes. These rosettes can be about 0.5 to 7 centimeters (0.2 to 2.8 inches) wide. The plant stands up a bit, and its thick, water-storing leaves can be shaped like cones, horns, or triangles. These leaves can be brown, reddish-purple, or green.
When it's time to bloom, the plant grows a stem with several branches, and each branch has a few flowers. These flowers open up into a star shape with five pointed white petals. Sometimes, you might see streaks of red on the petals. This plant usually blooms in March and April.
Different Kinds of Blochman's Dudleya
Just like there are different breeds of dogs, there are different kinds of Dudleya blochmaniae called subspecies. Here are a few:
- Dudleya blochmaniae subsp. blochmaniae: This type is listed as an Endangered species. This means there are not many of them left, and they need our help to survive.
- Dudleya blochmaniae subsp. brevifolia: This subspecies is found only in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Carmel Mountain in San Diego County, California. It is also an Endangered species.
- Dudleya blochmaniae subsp. insularis: This one is sometimes called the Santa Rosa Island dudleya. It lives only on Santa Rosa Island (California). This subspecies is listed as Critically endangered, which means it's in even more danger of disappearing forever.
