Block is a small place in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a settlement that is not part of an official city or town. It does not have its own local government.
Block is located near the Union Pacific railroad tracks. It is northeast of a town called Villa Grove. People sometimes call it Block Station.
History of Block
Block was started between 1903 and 1904. A railroad company built a new train line. This line went from Villa Grove to Woodland. The community was named after the person who owned the land. This landowner helped plan out the area for the new settlement.
Early Buildings in Block
When Block was first created, it had important buildings. There was a train station, called a railroad depot. This was where trains stopped and people got on or off. There was also a grain elevator. This tall building was used to store grain from local farms.
Block also had a grocery store. This store served the community for many years. It stayed open until the late 1950s or early 1960s. After it closed, the building was changed. It was turned into apartments where people could live.
