The Blondeau River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It's a branch of the Fraser River. This river flows through the areas of Belleterre and Latulipe-et-Gaboury. These places are part of the Témiscamingue Regional County Municipality.
The Blondeau River mostly flows through forests. Because of this, the main activities here are forestry (cutting down trees) and tourism. People enjoy visiting the area for fun.
During winter, the river usually freezes over. It's typically frozen from mid-November to mid-April. You can safely walk or play on the ice from mid-December to late March.
Where Does the Blondeau River Start?
The Blondeau River begins at a place called Lake Blondeau. This lake is in the town of Belleterre. Lake Blondeau is about 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) long and sits 321 metres (1,053 ft) above sea level.
Other smaller lakes and streams feed into Lake Blondeau. For example, Lake Martel's water flows into it. There are also three small islands in Lake Blondeau.
The start of the Blondeau River is:
- About 8.4 kilometres (5.2 mi) northeast of where the Blondeau River ends.
- About 18.9 kilometres (11.7 mi) east of the Fraser River (Ottawa River) mouth.
- About 34.5 kilometres (21.4 mi) east of Des Quinze Lake on the Ottawa River.
How the River Flows
The Blondeau River flows for about 21.9 kilometres (13.6 mi). It starts from Lake Blondeau and generally flows west. Along its path, it goes through some marshy areas. It also passes into the area of Latulipe-et-Gaboury.
The river eventually empties into the east side of the Fraser River (Ottawa River). This meeting point is located:
- About 11.2 kilometres (7.0 mi) southeast of where the Fraser River itself ends.
- About 6.7 kilometres (4.2 mi) southeast of the village of Latulippe.
What's in a Name?
The name "Blondeau" comes from a French family name. Long ago, this river was known by a different name: "Little Fraser River."
The name "Blondeau River" became official on December 5, 1968. This was when the Commission de toponymie du Québec was created. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
