Bloomeria is a group of flowering plants. They are known as geophytes, which means they grow from underground bulbs, like onions or tulips. These plants belong to the Asparagaceae family, which also includes asparagus!
The name Bloomeria comes from Hiram Green Bloomer (1819–1874). He was an important botanist (a scientist who studies plants) from San Francisco.

Types of Bloomeria Plants
There are three main types, or species, of Bloomeria plants. They all grow naturally in California and Baja California (a part of Mexico).
Bloomeria clevelandii
This plant is found in San Diego County in California. It also grows in the northern parts of Baja California.
Goldenstar (Bloomeria crocea)
The Bloomeria crocea is often called Goldenstar. This plant is found in both Baja California and California. It gets its name from its bright, star-shaped golden flowers.
Bloomeria humilis
Bloomeria humilis grows along the central coast of California. You can find it in places like Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties.
