Bloomsbury is a small town and coastal area in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Mackay Region. In 2016, a count of the people living there showed that Bloomsbury had 598 residents.

Where is Bloomsbury?

Bloomsbury is located in a mix of flat farmlands and mountains. The main road, called the Bruce Highway, goes right through the middle of the area. It runs from the south to the north.

A railway line, the North Coast railway, also runs through Bloomsbury. It follows the highway closely. The town has its own train station, Bloomsbury railway station.

Much of the flat land is used for growing sugarcane. There are special small railways, called cane tramways, that help move the harvested sugarcane. These tracks take the cane to nearby sugar factories.

A Look Back in Time

Bloomsbury State School first opened its doors on May 16, 1927. This school has been an important part of the community for many years.

The town also had a post office for a long time. The first postal office opened around 1896. It became a full post office in 1909 but closed a few years later. A new post office opened in 1926 and served the community until about 1993.

What's in Bloomsbury?

Bloomsbury State School is a primary school for students from Prep to Year 6. It is run by the Queensland Government. You can find it at 8545 Bruce Highway. In 2016, the school had 80 students. It also had 7 teachers and 6 other staff members. Students from both Bloomsbury and the nearby Midge Point area attend this school.

The Mackay Regional Council provides a handy service for the community. A mobile library visits Bloomsbury every two weeks. It stops near the school on the Bruce Highway. This means people can borrow books and other materials right in their town.
