The Story of Blue Bird Toffee
Harry Vincent first called his toffee Harvino. But he later changed the name to Blue Bird. He got the idea after watching a play called 'The Blue Bird of Happiness'.
A Good Place to Work
Harry Vincent believed that a workplace should be a pleasant place for people to be. He had similar ideas to other famous chocolate makers like Cadbury and Frys. They all thought that a happy work environment was important.
Moving and Changing Hands
Blue Bird Toffee left its original factory in the West Midlands in October 1998. The company then moved to Hull and became part of another company called Needler's.
In December 2021, the old factory building in the Midlands received permission for some changes. Part of the building was carefully taken down. The remaining part, which is a special historic building, was turned into apartments. The rest of the land around it was also developed for housing.
The End of an Era
After Needler's bought Blue Bird Toffee, they changed their company name to Needler Bluebird. However, in 2002, another company called Ashbury Confectionery bought Needler Bluebird. Ashbury Confectionery then stopped making all the toffees and sweets that Needler's and Blue Bird used to produce.
A Sweet Legacy
Even though Blue Bird Toffee is no longer made, its history is preserved. Ashbury Confectionery donated a collection of old Blue Bird packaging to the Black Country Living Museum. This means people can still see what the toffee looked like in the past.
