What is a Brand?
A brand is a way for a company to show who they are. It includes things like a special name, a logo (a picture or symbol), or even a unique sound. The main goal of a brand is to make a product or service different from others. This helps customers remember and choose it.
For example, when you see the red and white Coca-Cola logo, you know exactly what drink it is. Or, when you see a Ferrari car, you recognize its famous horse logo. These are strong brands that people know all over the world.
Brands Through History
The idea of branding isn't new! Even in ancient times, people used marks to show where goods came from.
Ancient Brands
- In ancient Greece and Rome, special shapes of amphorae (large jars) or marks on pottery could tell people about the quality of wine or oil inside.
- Roman oil lamps sometimes had a maker's mark on the bottom.
- In ancient China, shops used copper printing plates to create unique trademarks, like the "White Rabbit" mark for a needle shop during the Song Dynasty.
Modern Brands Begin
As more people started buying things from shops instead of making them at home, brands became even more important.
- One of the oldest recognized brands is Lyle's Golden Syrup, which was first sold in London in 1885. Its packaging is still very similar today!
- Companies like Quaker Oats were among the first to use a character, the "Quaker Man," on their packaging and in their ads around 1900. This helped people connect with the brand.
- The Coca-Cola bottle itself is a famous part of its brand. Its unique shape is instantly recognizable, even without the label.
