Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Blue Mills is a small place in Jackson County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is known as an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is managed as part of the larger county.

History

The community of Blue Mills got its name from a special building called a watermill. This mill was located right on the Blue River. A watermill uses the power of flowing water to turn a large wheel, which then helps to grind grain into flour or perform other tasks.

A post office, which is where people sent and received letters and packages, was opened in Blue Mill in 1835. This post office was very important for people in the community to stay connected with others. It operated for many years until it finally closed down in 1895. For a period of time, the community was also known by another name, Twyman.
