Blue Plate Mayonnaise was first made in 1929 by the Wesson Oil & Snowdrift Company. A person named Charles A. Nehlig helped start it. He was a top manager at a related company called Gulf and Valley Cotton Oil Company.

How Blue Plate Mayonnaise Started

Blue Plate was one of the first mayonnaise brands made and sold in stores across the United States. It was first produced in Gretna, Louisiana. In 1941, the company moved its production to a special building called the Blue Plate Building in Gert Town, New Orleans.

Where It's Made Now

In 1974, the Reily Foods Company bought Blue Plate. They kept making the mayonnaise in the same New Orleans factory for many years. Then, in 2000, the production moved to a Reily Foods factory in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Historic Blue Plate Building

The original Blue Plate Building in New Orleans is no longer used for making mayonnaise. It has been changed into apartments for artists, called the Blue Plate Artist Lofts. This building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.

Many people enjoy Blue Plate Mayonnaise. In 2018, a popular food website called Epicurious said that Blue Plate was "the best mayonnaise you can buy in a grocery store."
