Blue Plate Mayonnaise is a popular brand of mayonnaise. It is owned by the Reily Foods Company, which has its main office in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Blue Plate was one of the first mayonnaise brands made for sale in stores across the United States. It has been a favorite in many kitchens for a long time.

The Story of Blue Plate Mayonnaise

Blue Plate Mayonnaise was first created in 1929. It was started by the Wesson Oil & Snowdrift Company. Charles A. Nehlig, who worked for a part of that company, helped found it.

Where Blue Plate Was Made

The first place Blue Plate Mayonnaise was made was in Gretna, Louisiana. This was in 1929. Later, in 1941, the company moved its production to a new building. This building was called the Blue Plate Building and was located in Gert Town, New Orleans.

In 1974, the Reily Foods Company bought Blue Plate. They kept making the mayonnaise in the same New Orleans factory. However, in 2000, the production moved again. It moved to the Reily Foods factory in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Blue Plate Building Today

The original Blue Plate Building in New Orleans is no longer used for making mayonnaise. It has been changed into apartments called the Blue Plate Artist Lofts. This building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical place.

Blue Plate mayonnaise was invented around the same time as the famous po' boy sandwich. This happened during a streetcar strike in New Orleans in 1929. Because of this connection, some people at Blue Plate and their advertising team jokingly call it "the official mayonnaise of the po' boy."
