About the Blue Surgeonfish
What Does It Look Like?
The blue surgeonfish can grow up to about 23 centimeters (9 inches) long. Its body is flat and oval-shaped. Like other surgeonfishes, it uses its side fins to swim. Its tail fin looks like a crescent moon.
This fish has a special "surgeon's scalpel" on its tail. This is a sharp, movable spine it can use for defense. Its mouth is small and pointed, like a beak. It has tiny, sharp teeth for reaching food in tight spots.
The fish's body is a bright blue color. Its top fin and the base of its tail are yellow. Its head is black, and its throat, belly fin, and bottom fin are white. Its side fins are clear with a hint of yellow. The brighter its blue color, the healthier the fish usually is! Unlike some other fish, its colors don't change as it grows older.
Where Does It Live?
The blue surgeonfish lives in tropical parts of the Indian Ocean. You can find it in shallow, clear waters near coral reefs. It especially likes flat reef tops and areas along the edges of reefs that face the open sea.
How Does It Behave?
The powder blue tang is a plant-eating fish, also known as a herbivore. It mostly eats algae that grows on the ocean floor. This fish is active during the day.
It often lives alone and can be quite protective of its space. It might act aggressively towards other surgeonfish. However, if there's lots of food around, these fish might gather in groups to eat. If food is scarce, they will compete individually. They use their "surgeon's scalpel" as a way to defend themselves.
Why Is This Fish Important?

The powder blue tang is very popular in the marine aquarium hobby. People love its vibrant colors for their home fish tanks. It can be a bit tricky to care for, but it's still commonly sold. Other fish like the regal tang and yellow tang are even more popular.
Blue surgeonfish can sometimes get a common fish illness called Cryptocaryon irritans (also known as marine ich). They are generally safe to keep with corals in a reef tank. They usually get along with most other fish species, but they might not get along well with other fish from the same Acanthurus group.
