The blue warehou (Seriolella brama), also known as the common warehou, is a cool fish found in the waters around southern Australia and all of New Zealand. It's a type of medusafish and belongs to the Centrolophidae fish family.
You can find blue warehou swimming at different depths, from as shallow as 5 meters (about 16 feet) all the way down to 400 meters (about 1,300 feet) deep! These fish can grow to be quite long, reaching up to about 75 centimeters (nearly 30 inches).
What's in a Name?
The blue warehou has a scientific name, Seriolella brama. This name helps scientists around the world know exactly which fish they are talking about. It was first described by a scientist named Albert Günther in 1860.
Don't Get Confused!
It's easy to mix up the blue warehou with another fish called the bluenose warehou. In New Zealand, people often just call the bluenose warehou "bluenose." Other names for it include bonita, big-eye, or Griffin's silverfish.
The main difference is where they live. The bluenose warehou is a deepwater fish, meaning it prefers much deeper parts of the ocean. Even though they are both part of the larger "warehou" family, they are distinct species!
