Boí (pronounced "Boh-ee") is a charming village in the province of Lleida, located in the region of Catalonia, Spain. It sits right in the middle of the beautiful Vall de Boí (Boí Valley). This valley is part of a larger area called Alta Ribagorça.
The village is very close to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. This park is a huge natural area with stunning mountains, lakes, and forests. Boí even has an office where you can get information about the park. It's a great place for nature lovers and hikers!
Sant Joan de Boí Church
One of the most famous buildings in Boí is the Sant Joan church. This church is very old, dating back to the 12th century. It's a great example of Romanesque architecture. This style of building was popular in Europe around 1000 to 1200 AD.
What makes Sant Joan de Boí special?
The church has three main sections, called naves. It also has a tall bell tower attached to its side. This tower is built in the Lombard style, which means it has specific decorative arches and details. Two of the tower's three levels are original from when it was first built.
Ancient Paintings and Art
Inside the church, you can see amazing paintings from the 12th century. These artworks show different mythical animals. The original paintings, known as the Paintings from Sant Joan in Boí, are now kept safe in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. However, you can see excellent copies of these paintings right inside the church in Boí.
