Bo Bergman
Bo Bergman was a famous Swedish writer.

Bo Hjalmar Bergman (born October 6, 1869 – died November 17, 1967) was a Swedish writer and literary critic. He was also a member of the Swedish Academy, a very important group that works to improve the Swedish language and literature. He held Seat 12 from 1925 until he passed away. His writings have inspired many well-known Swedish music composers, like Wilhelm Stenhammar and Karin Rehnqvist.

About Bo Bergman

Bo Bergman was born and died in Stockholm, Sweden. He spent his whole working life there as a postal official. He retired from the postal service in 1933.

His Start in Writing

Bergman started writing poetry while he was working for the Swedish postal service. His very first collection of poems, called Marionetterna, was published in 1903.

A Critic and Writer

Besides his job at the post office, Bergman also worked as a literary critic. This means he wrote reviews and opinions about books and other writings. He did this for a magazine called Ord och Bild from 1900 to 1904. He also worked for a major newspaper, Dagens Nyheter. He even reviewed plays as a theatre critic from 1905 until 1939.

His Writing Style

Bo Bergman was good friends with Hjalmar Söderberg, another important Swedish writer. They wrote many letters to each other for a long time. Bergman's early writing was influenced by a style called the decadent movement. This style often explored themes of change and feeling a bit lost in the world.

His first poetry book, Marionetterna, means The Marionettes. In this book, he wrote about how people's lives might seem controlled by someone else, like puppets on strings. Later in his life, Bergman's ideas changed. He started to write more about human strength and hope. This change happened as a reaction to bad things happening in the world, like the rise of Nazism.

Where He is Buried

Bo Bergman is buried at the Norra begravningsplatsen, a large cemetery in Sweden.
