Early Life and College Basketball
Bo Outlaw went to John Jay High School. In his senior year, his team, the Mustangs, had an amazing 38-0 record. They only lost in the state championship game.
After high school, Outlaw played college basketball. He played for South Plains College and then the University of Houston. At the University of Houston, he was a star player. He averaged 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He also led NCAA Division I in field goal percentage (how often he made his shots) at .684. In 1993, he decided to try for the NBA draft, but he was not chosen by any team.
Starting His Professional Journey
Even though he wasn't drafted, Bo Outlaw started his professional career. He first played in the CBA. This league was a step below the NBA. While playing for the Grand Rapids Hoops, he was a great shot-blocker. He led the league by blocking 3.8 shots per game.
On February 15, 1994, Outlaw joined the NBA. He started his NBA journey with the Los Angeles Clippers. In his first game, he scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. He played three full seasons with the Clippers. In 1997, his team made it to the playoffs. However, they were defeated by the Utah Jazz in the first round.
Time with the Orlando Magic
After leaving the Clippers, Bo Outlaw signed with the Orlando Magic in 1997. He quickly became an important player for them. In the 1997–98 season, he started in 76 of 82 games. He achieved his highest career averages in almost every stat category that year.
A funny moment happened on April 17, 1998. Outlaw had an amazing game against the New Jersey Nets. He scored 25 points, got 13 rebounds, and made 10 assists. This is called a "triple-double." When reporters asked him about his first triple-double, he famously asked, "What's that, some kind of hamburger?" He didn't even know what a triple-double was! He played two and a half more seasons with the Magic after that.
Moving Around the NBA
In November 2001, Outlaw left the Magic and joined the Phoenix Suns. He played for the Suns for a season and a half. Then, he moved to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2003. There, he played with his former Magic teammate, Mike Miller.
After one season in Memphis, Outlaw returned to the Phoenix Suns in 2004. He faced some injuries there, which limited his playing time. In the 2005–06 season, he returned to the Orlando Magic for a third time. He played 75 more games for them over three seasons. Outlaw was released by the Magic in November 2007.
Over his entire NBA career, Bo Outlaw played in 914 games. He averaged 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He is remembered as a hardworking player who always gave his best. Today, he lives in Orlando.
