Charles "Bo" Outlaw is an American former professional basketball player. He was born on April 13, 1971, in San Antonio, Texas. Bo Outlaw is known for his strong defense and energetic playing style.
He went to John Jay High School, graduating in 1989. In his senior year, Bo led his high school team, the Mustangs, to an amazing 38–0 record. They only lost in the state championship game. After high school, he played college basketball for South Plains College and the University of Houston. At the University of Houston, he was a top player, averaging 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He also led NCAA Division I in field goal percentage with an impressive .684. In 1993, he decided to try for the NBA draft but was not chosen by any team.
Bo Outlaw's Professional Basketball Career
Bo Outlaw started his professional journey in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for the Grand Rapids Hoops. In the CBA, he quickly became known for his shot-blocking skills. He led the league with 3.8 blocks per game. Because of his great performance, he was named to the All-CBA Second Team, the All-Defensive Team, and the All-Rookie First Team in 1994.
Joining the NBA: Los Angeles Clippers
On February 15, 1994, Bo Outlaw made his debut in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers. In his first game, he scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Clippers won that game against the Los Angeles Lakers 100–89. He played three full seasons with the Clippers. In 1997, his team made it to the playoffs. However, they were defeated by the Utah Jazz in the first round.
Playing for the Orlando Magic
After his time with the Clippers, Bo Outlaw became a free agent. He signed a two-year contract with the Orlando Magic on September 5, 1997.
Bo Outlaw's Best Season with the Magic
During the 1997–98 season, Bo Outlaw had one of his best years. He started in 76 out of 82 regular season games. He achieved career-high averages in almost all his stats, except for assists. Even with his strong play, the Magic did not make it to the playoffs that year. After the season, the team's coach, Chuck Daly, retired. Doc Rivers became the new coach. Bo Outlaw signed another contract with the Magic and continued to play for them for two and a half more seasons.
The Famous "Hamburger" Quote
On April 17, 1998, Bo Outlaw had an amazing game. He scored 25 points, got 13 rebounds, and made 10 assists. This helped the Magic win 121–109 against the New Jersey Nets. After the game, reporters asked him about his first triple-double. A triple-double means a player gets double-digit numbers in three different stats (like points, rebounds, and assists). Bo Outlaw famously replied, "What's that, some kind of hamburger?". This showed his humble and funny personality.
Moving to Phoenix and Memphis
In November 2001, Bo Outlaw left the Orlando Magic. He then joined the Phoenix Suns. He played for the Suns for about a season and a half. After that, he moved to the Memphis Grizzlies. In Memphis, he reunited with his former Magic teammate, Mike Miller.
Returning to Phoenix and Orlando
After one season with the Grizzlies, Bo Outlaw returned to the Phoenix Suns in 2004. During this time, he faced some injuries. Also, the Suns had a very strong team, which limited his playing time. So, in the 2005–06 season, he went back to the Orlando Magic. He played 75 more games for the Magic over three seasons. Bo Outlaw was released by the Magic in November 2007. He had played only 7 minutes in two games during the 2007–08 season.
Bo Outlaw played a total of 914 games in his NBA career. He averaged 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Today, he lives in Orlando, Florida.
