Boardman’s Drainage Windmill is a special windmill found at How Hill in the English county of Norfolk. It stands on the east side of the River Ant. Close by is a large old building called the Norfolk Broads Study Centre.

This windmill is about 1½ miles west of a village called Ludham. It is also a very important historic building. This means it is protected because of its special design and history.

What is Boardman's Windmill Like?

Boardman’s Drainage Windmill has a very interesting design. It is built using an open timber frame, almost like a skeleton. This makes it look different from many other windmills.

It has a small top part, called a cap, along with sails and a fantail. These parts help it catch the wind. It looks a bit like the bigger, traditional windmills you might see in the Norfolk Broads.

The Norfolk Windmills Trust and the Broads Authority worked together to fix up this windmill. This helps keep it in good condition for everyone to see. Not far from here, on the same river, you can find another small windmill called Clayrack Drainage Mill.

The History of Boardman's Windmill

Boardman’s drainage windmill was built in 1897. A local builder named Daniel England from Ludham created it. This type of windmill is sometimes called a trestle mill or skeleton mill.

These mills were a cheaper way to build windmills than using bricks. Because they were mostly made of wood, not many of them have lasted through the years. The weather and time can be tough on wooden structures.

Boardman’s mill is one of only three trestle mills still standing in the Broads area. The other two are located at Horning and St Olaves.

Originally, this mill had a large wheel called a scoopwheel to move water. Later, this was changed to a turbine pump, which is a different kind of pump. Boardman’s mill stopped working in 1938. It was blown over during a very strong wind, called a Gale.
