Musical Journey
Starting His Career
Bob Daisley started playing guitar when he was 13 years old and switched to bass guitar a year later. He quickly became known in his local music scene in Australia. He played in a few early bands, including Kahvas Jute, which released one album called Wide Open in 1971.
In 1972, Daisley moved to England and joined the blues band Chicken Shack. A year later, he joined the band Mungo Jerry. In 1975, he helped form the band Widowmaker and played on their first two albums.
His big break came in 1977 when he joined Rainbow, a band led by famous guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Daisley played bass on parts of the album Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. He left Rainbow in 1979.
Working with Ozzy Osbourne
In 1979, Daisley met Ozzy Osbourne, who had just left the band Black Sabbath. They decided to start a new band together. They were joined by guitarist Randy Rhoads and drummer Lee Kerslake. They called their band The Blizzard of Ozz, but it was later just known as the Ozzy Osbourne band.
Daisley was a key part of the band's first two albums. He played bass, co-produced, and co-wrote all the songs for Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. However, he and drummer Lee Kerslake were let go before the second album was even released. Another bassist, Rudy Sarzo, was given credit on the album cover, even though Daisley played all the bass parts.
Getting Credit for His Work
For many years, Daisley and Kerslake fought to get proper credit and payment for their work on the Ozzy Osbourne albums. They had to go to court to get their names put on the Diary of a Madman album.
Later, they sued again for unpaid royalties (money earned from album sales). In 2002, new versions of the albums were released where the original bass and drum parts were re-recorded by other musicians. This meant Daisley and Kerslake's performances were erased.
However, in 2011, the albums were re-released again, this time with the original bass and drum parts restored. Fans could finally hear Daisley and Kerslake's amazing performances once more.
Daisley continued to work with Osbourne on and off during the 1980s. He wrote songs and played bass on albums like Bark at the Moon (1983), The Ultimate Sin (1986), No Rest for the Wicked (1988), and No More Tears (1991).
Other Famous Bands
Uriah Heep
After first leaving Ozzy Osbourne's band, Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake joined the band Uriah Heep in 1981. They recorded two albums, Abominog and Head First, which helped make the band popular again.
Gary Moore
Daisley had a long friendship and working relationship with guitarist Gary Moore. He played on many of Moore's albums and toured the world with him. He continued to work with Moore until the guitarist's death in 2011.
Black Sabbath
In 1986, Daisley was asked to play bass on the Black Sabbath album The Eternal Idol. He was asked to join the band full-time but decided to stay with Gary Moore instead.
More Music and Projects
Throughout his career, Daisley has played with many other artists. He played with Yngwie Malmsteen, Bill Ward (the original drummer for Black Sabbath), and Jeff Watson from the band Night Ranger.
In 2003, he formed a band called Living Loud with Lee Kerslake, Steve Morse (from Deep Purple), and singer Jimmy Barnes. They recorded an album that included new versions of songs from Ozzy Osbourne's first two albums.
