Robert Wilson's Football Journey
Robert Wilson was born in Musselburgh, Scotland. He started playing football for a local junior club called Musselburgh Athletic. In November 1954, he joined Aberdeen, a professional team.
Playing for Aberdeen
During the 1955–56 season, Robert became a regular player for Aberdeen's first team. That season was very exciting! Robert and his team won the Scottish League Cup. They played against St Mirren in the final and won the trophy.
Moving to English Clubs
In May 1957, Robert left Scotland and moved to England. He joined Norwich City, a team in the Football League Third Division South. He played regularly in his first year there. However, he later lost his starting spot on the team.
In 1960, Robert decided to leave Norwich City. He joined Gillingham, a club in the Fourth Division. He played 35 Football League matches for Gillingham.
Captain of Accrington Stanley
After one season with Gillingham, Robert wanted a new challenge. Many Scottish clubs were interested in him. But he chose to stay in England and join Accrington Stanley. This team was also in the Fourth Division.
Robert became the captain of Accrington Stanley. Sadly, in March 1962, the club faced big money problems. They had to leave the Football League. This meant Robert Wilson was the last player to captain the original Accrington Stanley team in a professional match.
Later Career
After Accrington Stanley, Robert joined another Fourth Division club, Chester. He played 15 matches for them. Then, he left professional football. He continued to play in non-league football for a team called GKN Sankey in Shropshire.
