Robert Aylward (born April 1, 1955 – died July 14, 2022) was an Irish politician. He was a member of the Fianna Fáil political party. Robert Aylward served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny area. A TD is like a Member of Parliament in other countries. They represent their local area in the Irish parliament, called the Dáil. He was a TD from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2020.
Politics and Public Service
Robert Aylward was involved in local politics for many years. From 1992, he was a member of Kilkenny County Council. This council helps manage local services in County Kilkenny. He was even the chairperson of the Council from 2003 to 2004.
His family has a history in Irish politics. His brother, Liam Aylward, was also a politician. Liam represented the same area as a TD before Robert. Their father, Bob Aylward, was a Senator. A Senator is a member of the upper house of the Irish parliament.
Besides his political work, Robert Aylward also worked as a farmer.
He first became a TD in 2007. He lost his seat in the 2011 general election. A general election is when people vote for all the TDs in the country. However, he won his seat back in a special election in May 2015. This special election is called a by-election. He then lost his seat again in the general election held in February 2020.
Personal Life and Education
Robert Aylward was married to Helena Long. They had two sons and one daughter.
He went to Castlegannon National school and Scoil Aireagail vocational school. He also studied at Kildalton Agricultural College. This college teaches about farming. He was a member of the Ballyhale Shamrocks GAA Club. This is a local sports club for Gaelic games. Robert Aylward passed away on July 14, 2022.
