Bobby Barrdjaray Nganjmirra (born around 1915, died 1992) was an important Aboriginal artist. He belonged to the Kunwinjku people and was part of the Djalama clan. Bobby was born in a place called Malworn, in West Arnhem Land, Australia.
He mostly grew up following a traditional way of life. He spent short times at school in Gunbalanya and on Goulburn Island. Bobby Nganjmirra became one of the most famous early modern bark painters from the Kunwinjku people. He painted at the same time as other well-known artists like Bardayal 'Lofty' Nadjamerrek and Yirawala.
A Family of Artists
Bobby Nganjmirra came from a very artistic family. His brothers, Jimmy Nakkurridjdjilmi Nganjmirra and Peter Nganjmirra, were also famous artists. Their sons and grandsons have continued this tradition. They form an important family of artists in western Kunwinjku art. Many of them still create art for Injalak Arts in Gunbalanya today.
After Bobby Nganjmirra passed away, he was known for some time by his skin name, Nawakadj. A big book about his art and stories was published using this name. The book is called Kunwinjku Spirit: Nawakadj Nganjmirra, Artist and Storyteller.
