This group was also known as the Detroit Spinners or the Motown Spinners. Bobby Smith sang lead for the group throughout its entire history.
The Spinners' Journey
The Spinners group started around 1954. They formed at Ferndale High School in Ferndale, Michigan. This town is just north of Detroit. The group got their first record deal in 1961. They signed with a company called Tri-Phi Records.
Bobby's Voice on Hit Songs
Bobby Smith was the lead singer of The Spinners from the very beginning. He sang lead on their first big hit song in 1961, "That's What Girls Are Made For". He also sang lead on most of their songs from the 1960s when they were with Motown Records. Some of these popular songs included "Truly Yours" (1966) and "I'll Always Love You" (1965).
Bobby Smith also sang lead on many of The Spinners' biggest hits with Atlantic Records. These included "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", and "They Just Can't Stop It the (Games People Play)".
A Number One Hit
In 1974, The Spinners had their only number one pop hit. This song was "Then Came You". Bobby Smith sang lead on this song with the famous singer Dionne Warwick. All four of these songs led by Bobby Smith earned "Gold" awards. This means they sold a lot of copies.
Sometimes, people mistakenly gave credit for these songs to another lead singer, Philippé Wynne. However, Wynne joined The Spinners much later. Bobby Smith's voice was always a key part of The Spinners' sound.
Bobby Smith's Legacy
Bobby Smith passed away on March 16, 2013, at the age of 76. He had been battling lung cancer. He died from pneumonia and influenza.
After the deaths of other Spinners members, Henry Fambrough is the only original member of the group who is still alive. He continues to perform with the current Spinners lineup. Bobby Smith's voice remains a beloved part of The Spinners' amazing music history.
