Henry Lee Fambrough (born May 10, 1938 – died February 7, 2024) was an American singer. He was a member of the famous R&B group The Spinners from 1954 until he retired in April 2023. Henry Fambrough was the very last original member of The Spinners still alive from 2013 until he passed away.
The Spinners: A Music Journey
The Spinners music group started in 1954 in Ferndale, Michigan. They were first called the Domingoes before changing their name to The Spinners. Henry Fambrough joined the U.S. Army in 1961. When he returned two years later, The Spinners signed a record deal with Motown Records.
For the next six years, they didn't have many big hit songs. Henry Fambrough even worked as a driver for the mother of the Motown boss, Berry Gordy Jr..
During the 1970s, when the group was very popular, Henry was one of their three main singers. He sang lead on classic songs like "I Don't Want to Lose You." He also shared lead vocals on "Living a Little, Laughing a Little" and "Ghetto Child."
Henry also sang with Dionne Warwick on the song "Just As Long As We Have Love." This song was from their 1975 album, Pick of the Litter. He also sang lead on "If You Can't Be in Love" from the album Happiness Is Being with the Spinners (1976). Henry Fambrough was the only member of The Spinners to be on every album they released, including their most recent one, Round the Block and Back Again, in 2021.
Retirement and Legacy
In April 2023, Henry Fambrough announced that he was retiring from performing. Even though he retired, The Spinners continued to sing without him. He still helped the group behind the scenes. He had been with the group for an amazing sixty-nine years!
The very next month, The Spinners were honored by being added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This happened sixty-nine years after they first formed.
After he announced his retirement, Henry told his fans, "The Spinners are still here and still singing for our people who want to hear us. And that's not going to change. We'll still be there for them."
Henry Fambrough was the last original member of The Spinners. Other original members like C. P. Spencer, Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, and Bobby Smith had passed away earlier. Henry Fambrough died on February 7, 2024, in Sterling, Virginia. He was 85 years old.
