How It Got Its Name
The name "Boca de Quadra" has a cool history. It was named in 1792 by a Spanish explorer named Jacinto Caamaño. He named it after another important explorer, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra.
Quadra's Expeditions
Juan Francisco de Bodega y Quadra was a Spanish naval officer. He explored and mapped many parts of the Pacific Northwest. His expeditions took place between 1775 and 1779. He helped to chart the coastlines of what is now Alaska and Canada.
Vancouver's Exploration
Later, in 1793, Captain George Vancouver of the Royal Navy explored this same area. He was also a famous British explorer. On August 6, 1793, he officially adopted the name "Boca de Quadra" for the bay. This helped to make the name permanent on maps.
