The Boca de Quadra is a beautiful bay located in Southeast Alaska. It stretches southwest from the Keta River all the way to the Revillagigedo Channel. This bay is special because most of it lies inside the amazing Misty Fjords National Monument.

Discovering Boca de Quadra

This bay is a long, narrow arm of the sea. It is surrounded by tall mountains and thick forests. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty. It is a popular spot for exploring and enjoying nature.

How It Got Its Name

The name "Boca de Quadra" has a cool history. It was named in 1792 by a Spanish explorer named Jacinto Caamaño. He named it after another important explorer, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra.

Quadra's Expeditions

Juan Francisco de Bodega y Quadra was a Spanish naval officer. He explored and mapped many parts of the Pacific Northwest. His expeditions took place between 1775 and 1779. He helped to chart the coastlines of what is now Alaska and Canada.

Vancouver's Exploration

Later, in 1793, Captain George Vancouver of the Royal Navy explored this same area. He was also a famous British explorer. On August 6, 1793, he officially adopted the name "Boca de Quadra" for the bay. This helped to make the name permanent on maps.
