The Bohemian Cafe was a famous restaurant located in the historic Little Bohemia neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. It opened its doors in 1924. The cafe was right next to the Prague Hotel.
From its early days, employees at the Bohemian Cafe wore traditional Czech outfits. The restaurant also had a small lounge area called the Bohemian Girl. Inside, you could see beautiful hand-painted folk-art pictures. These decorations were similar to the rest of the building's style. Famous people, like Conor Oberst from the band Bright Eyes, sometimes visited the cafe before performing nearby.
A Look Back in Time
The Bohemian Cafe first opened in 1924. Louie Marcala started it at a different address on South 13th Street. In 1947, Josef and Ann Libor bought the cafe. They moved it in 1959 to its well-known spot. This building used to be a bank and then a grocery store.
After Josef and Ann retired in 1966, their children and grandchildren took over. The family ran the cafe for many years. Even the fourth generation of the Kapoun family helped out. The cafe finally closed its doors on September 24, 2016.
The Cafe's Special Song
The Bohemian Cafe even had its own song! It was written in the cafe's early years. This catchy tune was used in several advertisements.
Here are the lyrics to the song: "Dumplings and kraut today
At Bohemian Café
Draft beer that’s sparkling, plenty of parking
See you at lunch, Okay?"
