The Boise Idaho Temple is a special building for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was the 29th temple built by the Church. This beautiful temple is located in Boise, Idaho.

History of the Boise Temple

Church leaders first thought about building a temple in western Idaho way back in 1939. But at that time, most church members lived in eastern Idaho. So, they decided to build the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple instead.

Forty-five years later, on March 31, 1982, church leaders announced a new temple. It would be built in the Boise area. The temple site is very easy to see from Interstate 84. It is also a clear landmark for pilots flying into Boise Airport.

In 1984, the temple held an open house. This is a time when anyone can come and tour the building. They expected about 70,000 visitors. But over 128,000 people came to see the temple! This open house helped many people learn more about the Church.

The Boise Idaho Temple was officially dedicated on May 25, 1984. Gordon B. Hinckley led the dedication. After it opened, many more people attended the temple than expected. Because of this, the temple closed for updates in October 1986.

Temple Design and Size

The Boise Idaho Temple has a unique look. It has a sloping roof and six tall spires. The temple is 35,325 square feet (3,281.8 m2) in size. Inside, it has four special rooms called ordinance rooms. It also has four sealing rooms.

After its first updates in 1987, the temple could serve over 100,000 members. These members live in southwestern Idaho and parts of eastern Oregon.

In 2020, the Boise Idaho Temple closed for a time. This was due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Major Renovation in 2011

The temple closed again on July 11, 2011, for a big renovation. This was a major update to the building. Before it reopened, another open house was held. It ran from October 13 to November 10, 2012.

The renovation improved the heating and cooling systems. The inside layout was also changed to be more efficient. The biggest change was on the outside. The old marble tiles were removed. They were replaced with beautiful gray granite tiles.

The temple was rededicated on November 18, 2012. Thomas S. Monson led this special event.
