A Historic Landing
Bold Cove was the site of a very important event long ago. On January 29, 1690, Captain John Strong made the first recorded landing on either West or East Falkland. He was sailing on his ship, the Welfare. His landing spot was at Bold Cove, a bit away from the farms known as Bold Cove and Manybranch Farms today.
Captain Strong's Journey
Captain Strong wrote about his landing. He said that on a Wednesday morning, they anchored in a harbor on the west side. They sent a small boat to shore to find fresh water. They also found many geese and ducks, which they caught for food. However, he noted that there was no wood. This was a bit surprising because even though trees don't grow there, driftwood often washes up on the beaches of the Falkland Islands.
Naming Falkland Sound
After his landing, Captain Strong named the body of water between West Falkland and East Falkland. He called it Falkland Sound. Later, the entire group of islands got their name from this sound.
Remembering the Past
To remember Captain Strong's important landing, a special plaque was put up at Bold Cove. This happened in 1990, exactly 300 years after he first stepped ashore. It helps people remember the history of this small, but significant, bay.
