The Bolduc Block, also known as the Majestic Theater, is a special old building in Conway, New Hampshire. It was built in 1923 and was the very first movie theater in the community. This building is also a great example of a design style called Art Deco, which is not very common in northern New Hampshire.

The Bolduc Block is listed on important lists of historic places. It was added to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2015 and the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Today, the Mountain Top Music Center owns this historic building.

The Bolduc Block: A Historic Theater

What is the Bolduc Block?

The Bolduc Block is a building that has been used for both businesses and entertainment. It was the first theater in Conway, which means it was a place where people could go to watch movies or performances. It's also known for its unique Art Deco style. Art Deco was a popular design style in the 1920s and 1930s. It uses geometric shapes, bold lines, and often has a fancy, modern look.

A Look Inside and Out

The Bolduc Block is located in the historic downtown area of Conway. It's a one-story building made of brick. The front of the building has a large sign that sticks out, called a marquee, over the main theater entrance. To the right of the entrance, there are several storefronts where different shops have been over the years. Above the building, there's a stepped wall called a parapet, which is a common feature in Art Deco buildings.

Inside, the building has been fixed up after a fire in 2005. Some of its original features are still there, like old-fashioned cast iron heaters and light fixtures.

From Fire to Future: The Building's Story

The Bolduc Block was built in 1923. It replaced several smaller shops that had been destroyed by a fire. When it first opened, the theater was called the "New Conway Theatre." Later, in 1931, it officially became the Majestic Theater.

Over the years, the shops in the building housed many different businesses. Even the local post office was located there for a while. In 2005, a fire caused a lot of damage inside the building. However, it was carefully restored and brought back to life.

The Mountain Top Music School, which teaches music and puts on performances, bought the building. They planned to reopen it as a place for music and shows.
