Bolonchén or Bolonchén de Rejón is a town in the Mexican state of Campeche. It's located about 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) east of Campeche, the state capital. As of 2010, about 3,975 people lived there. Not far from Bolonchén, you can find the interesting caves of Xtacunbilxunan.

What Does Bolonchén Mean?

The name "Bolonchén" comes from the Maya language. It means "Nine Wells." The second part of the name, "de Rejón," honors Manuel Crescencio Rejón. He was a lawyer born in Bolonchén who helped write the Mexican Constitution in 1917. Before 1955, the town was called Bolonchenticul. It was officially renamed Bolonchén de Rejón in September 1955.

Another important person from Bolonchén was Olegario Molina y Solis. He served as the Governor of Yucatán and was a minister during the time of President Porfirio Díaz (1877–1911). In 1833, Bolonchén was the only town in the area that avoided a serious sickness called cholera. This happened thanks to the efforts of Julian Molina y Bastante (Olegario's grandfather) and the Martinez brothers.

Ancient Maya Ruins

Just north of modern Bolonchén, you can find the large ruins of an ancient Maya city. These ruins date back to the Mayan Classic Period and Post Classic Period. Many of the carved stone decorations from these old buildings were removed. People used them for new construction projects between the 1700s and mid-1900s.

Even so, you can still see some monuments with sculptures and special Maya writing called hieroglyphs. John Lloyd Stephens visited and wrote about both the ruins and the nearby cave in the early 1840s. However, no detailed study of the ruins was done until Eric von Euw visited in 1973. This was partly because early visitors like Stephens didn't realize that some of the old writings were still there.
