The Bombardment of Algiers happened on August 27, 1816. This was a major naval battle. British and Dutch ships attacked the city of Algiers. They wanted to stop the Barbary pirates. The British also had a "Battering Flotilla." This group had 55 smaller vessels. These included gun-boats, mortar-boats, and rocket-boats. They were very useful for fighting close to shore.
