Booth Island is a cool, rugged island shaped like the letter 'Y'. It's about 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and rises to 980 meters (3,215 feet) high! You can find it off the northwest coast of the Kiev Peninsula in Graham Land, which is part of Antarctica. It's also in the northeastern part of a group of islands called the Wilhelm Archipelago.
Booth Island was first discovered by a German expedition led by Eduard Dallmann between 1873 and 1874. He probably named it after Oskar Booth or Stanley Booth, who were members of the Hamburg Geographical Society at the time. Another name, "Wandel Island," was given by a Belgian expedition later on. This was to honor Carl Frederick Wandel, a Danish explorer and mapmaker. However, the original name, Booth Island, stuck!
A very narrow and beautiful passage called the Lemaire Channel runs between Booth Island and the mainland. It's known for its amazing icy views.
Wandel Peak: The Island's Highest Point
The very highest spot on Booth Island is called Wandel Peak. It stands tall at 980 meters (3,215 feet). For a long time, it was considered one of the hardest peaks to climb in the Antarctic Peninsula.
However, on February 15, 2006, a group of Spanish mountain climbers successfully reached the peak! They got very close to the very top, stopping just 10 to 15 meters (33 to 49 feet) from the mushroom-shaped summit.
Other Interesting Spots
While Booth Island is mostly known for its rugged beauty and Wandel Peak, it also has other named features. These include places like Brouardel Point, Mount Lacroix, and Port Charcot. These spots add to the island's unique landscape and history.
