Bootie Island is a very small island located in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Shire of Cook and belongs to a group of islands called the Cockburn Islands.

Bootie Island is a tiny spot on the map! It is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of Cape Grenville. This island is found within the amazing Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

How Big is Bootie Island?

This small island is only about 0.02 square kilometers (or 2 hectares) in size. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of two international rugby fields!

Where to Find Bootie Island

You can find Bootie Island just north of Manley Islet and Buchen Rock. It's located within the Cockburn Reef area. It's also very close to the Pollard Channel and the Sir Charles Hardy Islands.

The Story Behind Bootie Island's Name

Bootie Island is thought to be named after a young sailor named John Bootie. He was a midshipman on the famous ship HMS Endeavour. This ship was led by Captain James Cook during his first big trip to explore the eastern coast of Australia. Sadly, John Bootie passed away at sea on February 4, 1771, during this important journey.
