Borås Municipality (called Borås kommun in Swedish) is a special area in western Sweden. It is located in Västra Götaland County. The main town and administrative center of this municipality is Borås.
In 1971, the City of Borås became a municipality. This happened when Sweden changed how its local governments worked. A few years later, in 1974, many smaller areas nearby joined with Borås. This made the municipality much larger. However, in 1995, a western part of Borås Municipality separated to form its own area, called Bollebygd Municipality.
In the 1990s, the local government group, known as the municipal assembly (or kommunfullmäktige), decided to use the name "Borås stad" or "City of Borås" for the entire municipality. This includes both the city and the countryside areas. This name change is just for how they talk about it. It does not change the municipality's official legal status.
