History of Shaft

Shaft was once called Borden, or Borden Shaft. It was an important place for coal mining. The main owners of the mines were the Borden family from Massachusetts.

Most mines in this area were "drift mines." These mines followed coal seams that were close to the surface. However, the mine in Shaft was a "deep mine." This meant it went much deeper into the ground to reach the coal.

In 1907, the H. and W. Hitchens Coal company ran the mine. A special machine called a "windlass" was used to lift things out of the deep mine. The C&P railroad helped set this large machine in place using their railroad crane.
