The Border Cheviot is a special type of sheep. People sometimes call it the South Country Cheviot. These sheep come from the United Kingdom. They are originally from the Cheviot Hills. These hills are located right between Scotland and England. This sheep breed has been known for a very long time, since the year 1372! Some stories say they came from Spanish ships that were wrecked long ago. The sheep supposedly swam to shore and started a new life. Border Cheviots are valued for their wool. However, farmers mostly raise them for their meat.

What Makes Border Cheviots Special?

Border Cheviot sheep have a unique look. They have a white face with no wool on it. Their legs are also free of wool. They have ears that stand up straight. Their nose, called a muzzle, is black. Their feet are black too. These sheep are very alert and active animals. They are always aware of their surroundings.

Their Amazing Wool

The wool from a Border Cheviot is very special. It has a unique curly shape. This shape makes the wool very springy and strong. It feels dense and firm. Good Cheviot wool should not have any rough hairs or colored spots. This strong wool is great for many uses.

Rams and Their Horns

Male Cheviot sheep are called rams. Some rams can have horns. These horns are usually curved. They add to the distinctive look of the Border Cheviot.
