Boris Grigorevich Kolker was born on July 15, 1939, in Tiraspol, which was part of the Soviet Union. He is a language teacher and a translator. He is also a big supporter of Esperanto, an international language. Until 1993, he was a citizen of the Soviet Union and then Russia. Since then, he has lived in the United States, in Cleveland, Ohio, and is an American citizen. In 1985, he earned a special degree called a Ph.D. in linguistics from a science academy in Moscow.

Dr. Kolker started learning Esperanto in 1957. He has written many articles about languages and reviewed books. He also created three very popular Esperanto textbooks for students.

One of his most famous books is eo:Vojaĝo en Esperanto-lando, which means Travels in Esperanto-Land. This book helps people learn Esperanto. It also acts like a travel guide to the culture of Esperanto speakers. Because of this book, many people know him as a guide to "Esperanto-Land."

Important Roles and Teaching

Boris Kolker is a member of the Akademio de Esperanto, which is like a language academy for Esperanto. He is also an honorary member of the World Esperanto Association. This is a big group that promotes Esperanto around the world. He also helps edit a monthly magazine called Monato.

For 20 years, he led a large Esperanto course by mail in Russia. About 900 students finished this course. He also taught Esperanto at universities in America, in cities like San Francisco and Hartford.

Today, Dr. Kolker runs an international Esperanto course that students can take from anywhere. He is also a Vice President for a group that sets exams for Esperanto teachers.

He has been involved in many important Esperanto organizations. He helped start and lead national Esperanto groups in the Soviet Union and Russia. He has given talks at several World Congresses of Esperanto. In 2000, he was in charge of the main topic at the 85th World Congress of Esperanto in Tel-Aviv.
