Bosanka (river) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bosanka river is a small but important river in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its name means "Bosnian woman." It flows into the Vrbanja river as a right tributary.

The Bosanka river starts on the southern side of the Uzlomac mountain. It begins from four different streams at an elevation of about 800 meters (2,625 feet). The river is about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. It flows through a place called Petrovići. The Bosanka river then joins the Vrbanja river between the villages of Dabovci and Dudići. This meeting point is downstream from Vrbanjci, right next to the M-4 highway that connects Banja Luka and Doboj.

Tributaries

The main stream that flows into the Bosanka river is called the Vodalka. It joins the Bosanka from the left side.

Other smaller streams, often called creeks, also feed into the Bosanka river system. On the eastern side of the Vodalka, you can find creeks like the Zmajevac, Pirizevac, and Breska. On the western side, there are creeks such as the Jelovac, Pušića potok, Svinjara, and Jošavka.

History and Importance

Rivers like the Bosanka have always been important for people living nearby. They provide water for drinking, farming, and even power. In 1950, there were eight watermills operating in the areas around the Bosanka and Vodalka rivers. These mills used the river's flow to grind grain, which was a common way to process food in the past.

During the Bosnian War in the 1990s, many people living near the Bosanka river faced difficult times. Communities in villages like Vrbanjci, Večići, Hrvaćani, Garići, and Rujevica were greatly affected by the conflict.
